‘Gymtimidation’ is described as the fear and intimidation commonly experienced by people when they consider attending a gym or even joining a new fitness programme.
If you can identify with the feeling of stress and embarrassment at the thought of working out in front of other people, then don’t worry…. you’re not alone, and – better yet – there’s hope!
Here are 3 ways to make you feel more confident in joining a Gym or Bootcamp programme:
1. I Won’t Be Able To Keep Up With Everyone
We all have to start somewhere, don’t forget that at some point everyone you are seeing in the gym will have been in your position at some point in their life and started as a beginner.
Do NOT compare yourself to other people when working out this will only demotivate you. You need to remember that this is your journey and it’s only your progress that really matters.
If you’re attending a group class a lot of people worry that the trainer is going to push them too hard and they won’t be able to keep up. This isn’t the case these are professionally trained individuals who want to help and support you through your fitness journey.
They create an environment that suits all fitness levels and should consider all abilities in their classes. Class instructors get new people in their sessions all the time, so they are used to seeing any initial fears you might have about starting.
2. Everyone will judge me
In all honestly whilst you may not realise it but most people when going to the gym or group classes aren’t actually interested in what other people are doing. Though it can be daunting to walk into the environment for the first time, once you are there, you will soon realise no one is watching anyone else.
Actually what you will probably find especially with group classes is that people want to help and support you.
3. I Don’t Know Where To Start Or What To Do
If it’s your first time at the gym then make sure you take full advantage of the inductions that mist gym offers. In this induction, they should provide you with overviews of the equipment and how to use it.
Even if you have already had an induction, you can still check how to use the machines with the instructors. It is better to ask and find out the correct techniques rather than guess and end up with an injury, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.
If your attending a group class then the trainer will ensure that you understand what you should be doing, they will give you direction and demonstration throughout the class.
Hope this helps you in kick-starting your Fitness Journey.
